Stage 6 gives the primary mountaintop end of the Vuelta a España, atop Pico Jano. The race units off from Bilbao and continues westward into Cantabria for an unprecedented go to to Pico Jano. In preparation for the Vuelta, the ultimate 4km part above the Alsa reservoir was paved.
There are three uncategorised climbs for the peloton to heat up the legs within the opening 35 kilometres after which a valley journey of roughly 20km units up the class 2 Puerto de Alisas.
A succession of two climbs, the uncategorised Puente Viesgo and the first-category Collada de Brenes, are more likely to disrupt proceedings for the assault to Jano Peak. Prior the ultimate climb, sprinters can cost for intermediate factors at Santa Cruz de Iguña.
Headed in a southerly course from Bárcena de Pie de Concha with 12.6km to go, the street rises with a median gradient of seven%, with two sections at 12%, for the primary half or so to the reservoir. The street then ranges out slightly, however the respite is transient after which tilts up with gradients of 6 to 11% for the end.
